History
The University of the Philippines College of Science Library (CSLIB) was formally established on 24 June 1987 under U.P. Administrative Order No. 62, in response to the creation of the College of Science by the Board of Regents in its 962nd meeting on 26 October 1983. From its inception, the library was envisioned as a vital partner in fulfilling the College’s mission of excellence in instruction, research, and extension service.
Between 1987 and 1994, CSLIB operated as a traditional library, housing a growing collection of print materials transferred from the U.P. Main Library and the National Science Research Institute. At the time, access to information relied on card catalogs, printed abstracts, and indexes, tools that served the academic needs of a steadily expanding user base. Interlibrary borrowing was available within the U.P. System and select nearby universities, laying the groundwork for broader resource sharing in the years to come.
In 1992, Mrs. Lourdes T. David, its previous Head Librarian, assumed the leadership of the DOST-ESEP Library Network. The acquisition of an integrated library software called “TINLIB” marked the start of its automation effort. On the following year, CSLIB received a UNESCO grant that funded infrastructure upgrades in the library.
On its 25th anniversary, the library moved into a larger building, formerly known as CSLAB, which was renovated and renamed CSLIB. This renovation is part of an ongoing improvement project aimed at enhancing facilities and expanding services for patrons. To meet the growing demand, the library has also established institute libraries. This unique configuration is designed to support greater customization and flexibility in services, tailored to the individual needs of library users.
In 2007, Dr. Caesar Saloma envisioned the creation of the UP College of Science Institute Libraries at the beginning of his three-year term as Dean of the College of Science. His vision coincided with the appointment of Mrs. Jocelyn Razal as Head Librarian of CSLIB. The Institute Libraries were officially established in April 2011, during the tenure of the current Head Librarian, Mrs. Marie Antoinette Villaflor. At the same time, most of the new College of Science institute buildings were constructed within the National Science Complex, providing dedicated spaces for the newly formed Institute Libraries.
Mrs. Susannah V. Deasis oversaw the early development of the Institute Libraries until 2013. Today, Mx. Fraymon Joy P. Cruz supports the Head Librarian in managing and modernizing both the physical and digital learning spaces of the College’s nine (9) Institute Libraries, in alignment with the College’s core functions of instruction, research, and extension.

*The date mentioned above indicates the time when the Institute Library was placed under the supervision of the College of Science Head Librarian.

Goals
- To create welcoming and innovative learning spaces where information can be explored and create new discoveries.
- To build, preserve and provide an effective and equitable access to science-related resources, information, and data that support the research activities of the students, faculty, and researchers in pursuit of new knowledge and technologies.
- To strengthen a culture of information literacy and lifelong learning by providing inclusive, creative, and responsive services to diverse communities within and outside the University.
Objectives
For the next five years, the following objectives are expected to be achieved:
1.1. To implement green, sustainable, technology and inspiring spaces for learning and innovation that cater to both individual and group learning needs, encompassing both enclosed and open spaces.
2.1. To provide a wide range of library and research services to support the entire process of scholarly research and communication.
2.2. To instill a strong library and research service culture through capacity building for staff empowerment.
3.1. To identify excellent instruction and research programs, and services that promote extensive collaboration and engagement for the College, University and the entire nation.
