All acquisitions are recommended by the faculty and head librarian (for reference materials). The recommendations are screened for duplicates and purchased if funds are available. Usually, 60-70% of the budget goes to journals while the remainder goes to books and other materials. Acquisition is limited generally to Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Meteorology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Earth Sciences, Oceanography, Marine Science, Computer Science, Material Science and Environmental Science. The library also collects selectively in the field of librarianship to serve its management needs and to sustain the professional growth of the staff.
Cataloging
All materials are catalogued. Books are classified using the Library of Congress Classification Scheme. Serials are nor classified but are arranged by title. All bibliographic information for new materials acquired are encoded in the library system.
Loans
Users may borrow books for home loans if they are members of the University. Non-members (non-UP) are allowed room-use privileges only. The following materials, Refernce books, Filipiniana, Theses and Dissertation and Journals may not be taken home by both types of users.
Reference
Librarians assist users in obtaining information from sources within and outside the library. Request by telephone or e-mail are also entertained and granted if possible. Bibliographies may also be provided upon request but readers are encouraged to prepare their own. Document search on cooperating libraries and document delivery are also available through the reference desk.
User Education
Assisstance in the use of catalogues, serials checklists, audio-visual materials, computers, Internet use, etc. is provided upon request. Library orientation is held, and copies of rules and guides are distributed to readers at the start of the term.
