On December 19, 1983, the College of Science of the University of the Philippines was established as a new college. Its first Dean, Dr. Roger Posadas worked for the establishment of the College of Science Library (CSLIB) to provide information support to the faculty, staff and students of the College. The CSLIB was established on June 24, 1987 under U.P. Administrative Order no. 62 (series of 1987).
From 1987 to 1994, the CSLIB operated as a traditional library with a collection composed mainly of print materials transferred from the Science Section of the U.P. Main Library and the National Science Research Institute. For access to information, it made use of the card catalog and printed abstracts and indexes. Interlibrary loan was limited to libraries within the University of the Philippines System and among neighboring university libraries.
In 1992, it became the lead institution of the DOST-ESEP Library Network. Under this project it acquired an integrated library system (TINLIB), hardware and software for a local area network and access to the Internet under a World Bank loan managed by the Department of Science and Technology. The DOST-ESEP Library Network was established to enable eight academic libraries to share resources, train staff on the use of new information technologies, automate services and access remote databases.
In 1993, it acquired a grant from UNESCO to: 1) link the U.P. Computer Center to the Internet, and 2) connect the CSLIB and U.P. College of Engineering to the Computer Center via a fiber optic backbone. This backbone became the library’s link to the Internet in 1994.
The DOST-ESEP Library Network was launched at the CSLIB in November 1995. Today, CSLIB remains as the lead institution of the DOST-ESEP Library Network. Document delivery services are in place and access to the library catalogs of the member libraries is possible on the World Wide Web.
